Experience the vibrant soul of the Caribbean with Toby Tobas, a Trinidad-born steel pan soloist and percussionist. With decades of musical experience, Toby brings a lifetime of Caribbean musical traditions, professional performance, and cultural understanding to every engagement.

From Trinidad & Tobago—the birthplace of the steel pan—to New York, Boston, and now Phoenix, Toby’s musical journey has been a lifelong dedication to sharing the spirit of the Caribbean.

Along the way, he performed, recorded, and toured with Harry Belafonte for four years as a drummer and percussionist, and appeared at renowned venues including Carnegie Hall, Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Apollo Theatre. His musical journey has taken him across the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Japan, bringing Caribbean rhythms and culture to audiences along the way.

Specializing in Background & Listening Music

Toby specializes in daytime events and gatherings where background and listening music can become a natural part of the experience—creating a warm, relaxed musical presence while allowing guests to converse, connect, and enjoy the occasion.

Today, Toby performs on double tenor steel pans and African Djembe Drum, supported by professional backing tracks that create the rich, balanced sound of a full ensemble while maintaining the intimacy of a solo performance.

His diverse repertoire is thoughtfully curated to appeal across generations, embracing Caribbean Folk, Jamaican Reggae, Trinidad Calypso, Afro-Cuban & Latin favorites, Guadeloupe and Martinique Zouk, Calypso Jazz, Brazilian Samba, Haitian Compas, and select popular standards.

This musical diversity allows Toby to shape each performance to the character of the occasion—creating an atmosphere that is both elegant, and memorable..

Now based in Phoenix, Arizona, Toby serves Maricopa County and surrounding areas, offering a distinctive musical experience rooted in cultural depth, professionalism, and genuine respect for every audience.
